Russia and Egypt co-operated to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza 'as soon as possible' and 'provide urgent humanitarian assistance' to its population, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated at a press conference following talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Ati in Moscow on Monday.

"We are united with our Egyptian friends in the need to achieve a ceasefire as soon as possible and to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to the population of the enclave. We noted the importance of continuing without any pause the collective work to create conditions for the establishment of a political settlement process on the basis of the two-state formula endorsed by UN resolutions, according to which Palestine and Israel, as two independent, autonomous States, should coexist with each other in peace and security," the Russian FM said.

Lavrov noted the US refusal to pass UN resolutions to 'end the bloodshed', adding that it had 'vetoed several resolutions promoted' by Russia and Arab countries.

"We are working in the UN Security Council, but so far, due to the well-known position, first of all, of the United States, it has not been possible to ensure that Israel fulfils the requirements that are put forward by both mediators and members of the UN Security Council," he emphasised.

Lavrov also pointed to Turkey's desire to join BRICS, stressing the organisation's growing authority.

The Egyptian Foreign Minister further stated the significance of the association and mentioned continued work to develop relations between Cairo and Moscow.

"We recognised the importance of the BRICS association and expressed our appreciation for the excellent work it is doing, for Russia's chairmanship of BRICS this year and the full alignment [of interests] between us. I once again express my gratitude to the distinguished Minister Sergei Lavrov for the warm welcome. We emphasise the joint work to achieve stability and prosperity of two friendly countries and peoples and to take this relationship to greater heights," the diplomat concluded.

Since January 1, 2024, Russia has held the presidency of BRICS. Five countries have become full members of the organisation during 2024, namely Egypt, Iran, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia.
