Crews of the Russian Emergencies Ministry were seen working on site of a petrol station’s explosion, which rocked the Novy Khushet settlement on the outskirts of Russia's Makhachkala on Friday evening.

Footage shows firefighters extinguishing a fire on the premises of the petrol station.

The agency announced that the fire, which engulfed an area of 1,500 square metres, had been contained. A total of 119 specialists, 27 units of equipment and four fire brigades were involved in the elimination of the consequences, with a further five units en route.

Five people, including a child, were killed and 15 others injured, according to preliminary reports.

The Head of the Republic, Sergei Melikov, arrived to the scene. He immediately ordered all relevant agencies to provide all the necessary assistance.

"We will provide comprehensive support to all those affected by this tragedy," Melikov stated in his Telegram channel.

Media reports citing operational services indicate that there may still be people under the rubble.

The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Dagestan has started a criminal case for providing services that fail to meet safety requirements for consumers, resulting in the death of two or more people by negligence.

The Prosecutor's Office of the Republic has set up an inspection following the petrol station fire to establish all the circumstances of the incident.
