Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stated that the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) 'should and will' have more influence in the international arena, speaking at a meeting of the Council of Heads of State in Astana on Thursday.

"Our common task is to strengthen the role of the United Nations as the main international institution for ensuring global security, capable of effectively meeting the challenges of the 21st century. The voice of the SCO should and will be louder in the international arena, promoting a consolidated position on the various problems of our time," Tokayev noted.

He added that the economies of the organisation's members were showing a high growth rate and the total volume of foreign trade of the SCO 'exceeds 8 trillion dollars, which is a quarter of the total world trade'.

According to Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, the role of the alliance in world politics was growing every year, while its members 'listen and hear each other' but 'do not dictate their will'.

"In terms of purchasing power alone, there are two powerful leaders in our organisation - China and the Russian Federation. And we still 'tremble before the dollar'. Let us finally take certain steps to become less dependent on this dollar. And you will see how those who manipulate the dollar will be frightened and realise that it cannot go on like this," the Belarusian leader suggested.

For his part, Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed Beijing's readiness to develop regional trade and economic co-operation, share experience in agriculture, ecology and environmental protection, and expand the share of settlements in national currencies within the SCO.

The 24th SCO Heads of State Council meeting is held in Astana on July 3-4.

Leaders are discussing the outcomes of the SCO's activities for 2023-2024, and exploring co-operation in political, security, economic and humanitarian affairs.

After the summit in Kazakhstan, the organisation’s presidency will pass to China for 2024-2025.

The organisation comprises India, China, Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan - and now Belarus - as well as 14 dialogue partners and two observer countries.
