Description

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov highlighted apparent contradictions in the West's policy towards Moscow over Ukraine, following a meeting with Chadian Foreign Minister Abderaman Koulamallah at a press conference in N'Djamena on Wednesday.

"They are supplying long-range systems and publicly saying, 'Attack any target on the territory of the Russian Federation'. And at the same time, they are convening a 'peace conference' in Switzerland, which will take place in 10 days," he said.

"Either you favour Russia's strategic defeat or peace conferences, but if you favour peace, I guess you have to solve the problem with all parties involved. <…> The organisers of this conference do not want peace," he continued.

For his part, Koulamallah emphasised that Chad observed 'clear neutrality' in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

"We always call for a peaceful solution. Chad, like other countries, knows the price of war. We do not want to take sides in this conflict because we have a clear position and it has already been explained by our authorities. We believe that a peaceful solution must be found. A solution that will be the result of negotiations," said the Chadian foreign minister.

A peace conference on the Ukrainian conflict is to take place on June 15-16 in the Swiss city of Burgenstock. Moscow has rejected the idea of such a forum held without its participation.

Ukrainian presidential spokesperson Serhiy Nikiforov has claimed that 107 countries and international organisations have confirmed their participation, including Ukraine's Western allies and some countries in South America, Africa and the Middle East.

On Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that China decided not to participate in a peace summit on Ukraine in Switzerland because, she said, the crisis needed Russia's presence for it to be resolved, among other issues. US President Joe Biden has not confirmed his participation, while Saudi Arabia, Brazil and Pakistan are among those who have stated that they will not take part at all.
