Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vulin said that BRICS could be a 'true alternative' to the EU for his country, during an interview with Russian media in Moscow on Monday, ahead of next week's BRICS Summit.

"One of the reasons why I'm so excited about BRICS is that, you know, no one asks of Serbia nothing. <…> They said, 'That's your way to living. You live however you think that is good for you'. And [they] offer us much more than we even ask. <…> Are the Serbians want[ing] to be part of BRICS or not? It's too early to say. I cannot say that. But I can say that we want to explore that opportunity. For the first time, we have true opportunity. We have true alternative to European Union," he said.

"I always said BRICS means 'Serbia among the friends'. No one ask of us nothing that we don't want to do. But BRICS can be a hope <…> They champion of system of value, respect of my way of living," he continued.

The deputy prime minister also praised the 'family' ties with Russia, emphasising that the country treated Serbia as an 'equal'.

"Russia is, I don't know, how many times bigger than Serbia, or China, or India. But when they speak with us, they speak like we are equal. <…> As you said, 'like a family'. No, we are family. We have no other family," he said.

Referring to the Ukrainian conflict, Vulin claimed that Ukrainians had paid the 'biggest price' for a Western desire to 'defeat Russia' and added that Serbia did not want to "be part of so-called European policy regarding sanctions" against Russia.

"Most of the West wish to defeat Russia. Not that support or help Ukraine, no, no, no. Defeat Russia. They don't want the peace. They want defeat of the Russia. <…> You know, there is lack of common sense. That's pure hatred. Hatred that must destroy you. You cannot do that. And biggest price to pay by Ukrainians," he said.

The 16th BRICS summit is scheduled for October 22-24 in Kazan. Leaders from more than 24 countries are expected to attend the event, including Russia’s closest neighbours, as well as its partners in the Eurasian Economic Union and the Commonwealth of Independent States.
