Deputy Foreign Minister, Sergei Ryabkov, stated that NATO's only purpose at the moment was to 'threaten' and try to force Russia into defending itself, during an interview with Russian media in Kazan on Friday,

"It's the raison d'etre [purpose] of NATO these days. And this is to threaten Russia to try to bring Russia into defensive, to try to expose Russia for further dangers. And all this is being done by member states in NATO individually and collectively, and also through its international secretariat, including currently outgoing Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg," he claimed.

The NATO alliance has previously and repeatedly insisted that its own purpose is 'purely defensive'.

Ryabkov also called the NATO leadership 'irresponsible' over allies 'so-called nuclear sharing activities'.

"We make our conclusions based on what we see on the ground, on how we feel about the actual readiness of the nuclear forces, which a number of NATO allies have under their command and several further NATO members perform so-called nuclear sharing activities, which is in complete contradiction with the requirements and obligations that these countries undertook under the non-proliferation treaties. So this so-called nuclear alliance essentially undermines international security architecture," he claimed.

Furthermore, the Russian deputy foreign minister outlined the purpose of the 'Treaty on the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership' with the DPRK as a 'defensive arrangement'.

"Our two countries, DPRK and Russia, came much closer to one another. This treaty provides for mutual assistance in case of aggression. And through this provision, I would say, we send a message that this is a purely defensive arrangement, which our two countries concluded. And only in case of aggressive actions against any of the parties, the other side would provide the assistance as described and as provided for in this treaty," Ryabkov concluded.

He added that making an agreement with the DPRK was in no way a 'threat' to South Korea or the US - something which Russian President Vladimir Putin also outlined earlier.

The treaty, signed between Putin and DPRK leader Kim Jong-un during the Russian leader's two-day visit to Pyongyang this week emphasised mutual military assistance in the event of an 'aggression' by a third country. This provision mirrors a similar clause from the 1961 treaty.
