South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said that Russia was a 'valued ally and friend' which had 'supported us from the very beginning', during a meeting with Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan on Tuesday.
"We are rather pleased that with your support, in every respect, we've been able to reach this point in the history of our country. So we continue to see Russia as a valued ally, as a valued friend, who supported us right from the beginning, from the days of our struggle against apartheid right through to now," Ramaphosa noted.
Meanwhile, Putin noted the joint efforts of Moscow and Pretoria in shaping a multipolar world.
"Russia and South Africa are largely co-ordinating their efforts in the international arena in order to create and shape a fair multipolar world order. And certainly, Russia attaches particular importance to strengthening relations with the countries of the African continent," Russian president added.
The 16th BRICS Summit is scheduled for October 22-24. World leaders from more than 20 countries are expected, with delegations from over 30 nations, for one of the major economic, political and cultural events of the decade.
Russia has chaired BRICS since January 1, 2024. The group also expanded this year, growing in both size and influence to nearly half the world’s population and a third of the global economy.
