Venezuela’s National Defence Council Secretary General Jose Ferreira stated that Caracas and Moscow were 'fraternal nations with an anti-imperialist vision', during a meeting with Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu in St Petersburg on Tuesday.

"It is appropriate to express our sincere congratulations on your appointment as Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation and to state our desire to continue to unite efforts as fraternal nations with an anti-imperialist vision," Ferreira said.

For his part, Shoigu conveyed his own congratulations to Nicolas Maduro on his recent re-election and said that Moscow was awaiting his state visit.

The Russian Security Council secretary also met with Cuban Interior Minister Lazaro Alberto Alvarez Casas and highlighted economic co-operation with Havana.

"We pay special attention to trade, economic and investment co-operation, including within the framework of the specialised bilateral intergovernmental commission. We trust that Havana, including with our help, will overcome the severe crisis consequences of the American economic blockade," he said.

Meanwhile, Minister of the South African presidential administration Khumbudzo Ntshavheni stated that BRICS members should work towards alternatives to the current global system.

"We look forward to contributing to BRICS as a strong and alternative multilateral system of the globe because the current multilateral systems are not…they're not neutral and they do not necessarily carry the interest of all," Ntshavheni said.

Shoigu held bilateral talks with Venezuelan, Cuban, Vietnamese, South African, Iranian, and Chinese officials during the meeting of representatives of BRICS and BRICS+ countries taking place in St Petersburg on September 10-12.
