Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Moscow welcomes Ankara’s ambition to join the BRICS group of nations, during a meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Moscow on Tuesday.
"We welcome Turkey's interest in the work of BRICS. Of course, we will support in every possible way this aspiration and desire to be together with the countries of this association, to be closer, to solve common problems," the President explained.
The Russian leader conveyed his best wishes to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, outlining the 'significant role' he had played in mediating over regional challenges.
“We gratefully acknowledge the willingness of our Turkish friends to contribute to the settlement of crisis situations, including the crisis around Ukraine. President Erdogan also played a significant role in the conclusion of the so-called 'grain deal'. It was not our fault that, unfortunately, it was not extended," Putin said.
"Together we have played a very significant role in the settlement of the Syrian crisis, and I think it would be right to continue the Astana format, to fight terrorism,” he continued.
“We are pleased to note the development of relations with the Turkish Republic. All of this is happening, of course, under the leadership and with the direct support of our friend, the President of the Turkish Republic,” the Russian leader noted.
The Turkish foreign minister thanked President Putin for a warm reception, noting that he had held a number of meetings in Moscow to discuss 'the Ukrainian crisis and the Syrian issue'.
Russia has been chairman of the BRICS grouping since January 1, 2024, when five countries joined the bloc as full members, namely Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia.
