Description

Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Issues in the Zaporozhye region Andrei Kozenko said that 'all the efforts have been made to ensure the safety of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant (ZNPP)' during the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) on Wednesday.

"All efforts have been made to ensure the safety of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, in terms of water supply for reactor cooling, in terms of water supply to settlements, in terms of irrigation of agricultural land," Kozenko said.

He also reported that the security of the plant was being provided by Russian forces, and that plans were in place for future development of the region.

"The hostilities have a very serious impact, but nevertheless we need to develop our economy, industry, agriculture, everything that will allow us to develop, we are now planning a dynamic development of housing construction, after this sector all others will begin to develop," he added.

Both Russia and Ukraine have repeatedly accused each other of striking the ZNPP, since it came under Russian control in March 2022.

Following last week’s explosion at the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) dam - which supplied the ZNPP with cooling water - International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi claimed there was 'no immediate risk' to the plant.

Moscow claimed Kiev had launched missile strikes on the dam, while Russia blamed Ukrainian forces.

Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.

Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. President Volodymyr Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.
