Description

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin stated that Moscow would continue its efforts to resolve the conflict in the Gaza Strip, during a ministerial meeting of the Group of Friends in Defence of the UN Charter on the sidelines of the 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit in Kampala on Thursday.

"The US de-facto blocked the work of the Security Council, preventing any attempts to stop the bloodshed in Gaza and avoid further escalating the crisis," he claimed. "As a result, both adopted resolutions 2712 and 2720 are doomed to remain on paper. Like not only the key demand to stop hostilities, but even any mention of Israel. Let me assure you that Russia will continue working so that the Security Council adopts decisions capable of ending the killing of innocent people and restoring efforts aimed at seeking viable long-term solutions," he added.

He also claimed that Israel's response to the October 7 Hamas attack should not become an excuse 'for a collective punishment of millions of Palestinians in Gaza and for the threat of a greater regional war'.

Washington has repeatedly sided with Israel at the United Nations, arguing that the country has a right to self-defence and that any 'ceasefire' would only benefit the Palestinian militant group. It did allow a UNSC resolution to pass calling for increased aid to the enclave, and for 'creating conditions' that could allow for a ceasefire.

The NAM is a forum that is not formally affiliated with, or opposed to, any major world bloc, and is the second largest association of its kind, after the United Nations. The organisation has more than 120 member states, 18 observer countries and 10 observer organisations. The summit is held in the Ugandan capital from January 15-20.

Fighting continues in Gaza in the fourth month of the Israel-Hamas war. Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

Israel declared war on the group and a 'complete siege' of Gaza, with a large-scale campaign of air strikes. A ground incursion began at the end of the third week, with Israeli leaders vowing to 'wipe out' Hamas. Palestinian officials reported that at least 24,000 people had been killed and more than 61,000 injured at the time of publication.

The IDF has repeatedly stated that it is targeting Hamas locations and infrastructure in the enclave. United Nations experts have warned against 'collective punishment' for the people of Gaza, before predicting a 'humanitarian crisis' and then claimed that 'hell is settling in' for the region.
