Armenia has suspended its participation in the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO), announced Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in an interview on Friday.

"The Collective Security Treaty Organisation has not fulfilled its security commitments to the Republic of Armenia, particularly in 2021 and 2022. And this could not pass without consequences for us. And in practice, the consequence is that, in fact, we have frozen our participation in the CSTO. What will happen tomorrow, we shall see tomorrow," the Armenian leader remarked.

Pashinyan also accused the Russian media of spreading 'systematic anti-propaganda' directed at Armenian leadership.

"During the events of September 2023, the highest officials of the Russian Federation directly called on the citizens of Armenia to take to the streets and overthrow the elected legitimate authorities. Russian TV channels have been conducting systematic and consistent, targeted anti-propaganda against the Armenian Government, the elected authorities and me personally for not a few days, but actually for six years now," he claimed.

On the same day, Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitri Peskov told reporters that Moscow intended to ask Yerevan for clarification on their statements about suspending its participation in the CSTO.

According to media reports citing the CSTO secretariat, Armenia has not filed any applications to suspend its membership in the organisation.

In November 2023, Pashinyan and Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan refused to attend the CSTO meeting in Minsk. The prime minister later said the government had become disillusioned with the organisation and called the security structures in which Armenia participated 'ineffective'.

"The Collective Security Treaty and the Charter of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation clearly state the actions to be taken when aggression against a member state occurs. What was described did not happen and, of course, it is disappointing for both the Armenian government and the Armenian public," said Pashinyan.

On November 23, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, commenting on the absence of Armenian representatives at the CSTO Minsk summit, said that political disagreements should be solved through negotiations rather than "demarches without certain reasons."

On December 14, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Armenia's withdrawal from the CSTO, CIS and EAEU was 'not in its interests'.

The CSTO includes Russia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
