Indian Foreign Minister Subramanyam Jaishankar underscored the shifting global landscape towards multipolarity during his address at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Astana on Thursday.

"Inexorably, the world is moving towards real multipolarity. In such a scenario, the SCO will only become more important," Jaishankar remarked, highlighting the organisation's growing significance in the international arena. He stressed the need for joint efforts to maintain momentum, underlining respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity as crucial principles.

Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev echoed Jaishankar's sentiments, describing the SCO as a magnet for countries seeking inclusive cooperation free from political and ideological biases.

"The SCO has consistently advocated for a just world order based on universally recognised principles of international law and multilateralism, with the UN playing a central coordinating role," President Mirziyoyev affirmed.

Additionally, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon emphasised the importance of implementing joint projects in high-tech sectors, investment, agriculture, and artificial intelligence among SCO member states.

The 24th SCO Heads of State Council meeting, chaired by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, convened in Astana on July 3-4. Discussions centred on reviewing the organisation's achievements from 2023-2024 and exploring collaboration across political, security, economic, and humanitarian domains.

Following the summit in Kazakhstan, the SCO presidency will transition to China for the 2024-2025 term. The SCO comprises India, China, Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and recently Belarus, alongside 14 dialogue partners and two observer countries.
