"The role of the BRICS in world affairs is growing rapidly. Therefore, I am sure that the popularity and attractiveness of the Games will also grow, as a competition free from political interference and pressure, truly uniting athletes from all over the world," Putin said.
"The Games will become another symbol of the expanding intercultural dialogue, a significant contribution to strengthening the friendship of peoples and fruitful cooperation between states in the interests of people and universal development," he continued.
The Russian president also called BRICS members a group of "sovereign countries that are developing dynamically while preserving their identity."
"Together they are solving large-scale tasks, showing an example of true partnership and equal relations based on trust, strong friendship and respect for each other's interests. I note that sports games under the auspices of our organisation are an important part of comprehensive political, economic and humanitarian cooperation," he added.
The BRICS Games are an annual sports competition between member states of the association. This year's event will be held in Kazan from June 12 to 23 and will bring together around 5,000 participants from 97 countries around the world.
