Description

Representatives of Armenia and Azerbaijan were seen exchanging prisoners of war at an undisclosed location on the border on Wednesday.

Footage shows the military delegations arriving at the exchange site, checking lists and transferring the captured servicemen.

The press office of the Azerbaijan's State Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons reported the release of 32 Armenian servicemen and two Azerbaijanis on Wednesday.

"On December 13, 2023, the above-mentioned military personnel were handed over at the Azerbaijan-Armenia border crossing the Gazakh district. There were no incidents during the delivery process," the agency stated.

In turn, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan confirmed the exchange on his official social media page.

"31 captured Armenian military and 1 serviceman captured in Nagorno-Karabakh in September have crossed the Azerbaijan-Armenia border and are in the Republic of Armenia. They will first undergo a preliminary medical examination and return to their relatives," he wrote, providing a list of the servicemen.

The exchange, agreed on December 7, was the first since Azerbaijan retook control of the breakaway territory of Nagorno-Karabakh, a separatist area governed by ethnic Armenians.

The long-running conflict escalated in September, with the beginning of what Azerbaijan called a 'counter-terrorist operation' in the region. Armenia described it as a 'large-scale aggression'.

Following the fighting, Nagorno-Karabakh's government said the self-declared republic would cease to exist by January 2024, while many ethnic Armenians left the area.

Baku claims sovereignty over the territory, while earlier this year, the Yerevan government recognised Azerbaijan’s claim - but also called for protection for the region's ethnic Armenians.
