Description

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced plans to establish embassies in Sierra Leone, Niger, and South Sudan at a press conference in Moscow on Thursday following Africa Day commemorations.

"We are actively working to broaden our diplomatic footprint across Africa. Last December, we saw the reopening of the Russian embassy in Burkina Faso, and we are currently in the process of establishing full diplomatic missions in Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and the Republic of South Sudan," stated Lavrov.

Speaking alongside Cameroon's Ambassador Mahamat Paba Sale, Lavrov further highlighted Russia's commitment to supporting Africa's pursuit of equality on the global stage.

"In contrast to the former colonial powers, our engagement with African nations is predicated on principles of equality and sincere partnership. We steer clear of politicisation, blackmail, coercion, and meddling in domestic matters," the minister added.

Sale, for his part, underscored the 'positive dynamic' characterising the relations between Russia and Cameroon, which he said both were keen to preserve in an increasingly multipolar world.

Africa Day is observed annually on May 25, marking the establishment of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1963.
