A mourning ceremony took place in the North Caucasian town of Beslan on Tuesday, marking the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attack on School No. 1.

Footage shows children releasing white balloons into the sky, before locals laid flowers at the site of the tragedy. The video also features mourners holding portraits of the victims of the terrorist attack and marching to the City of Angels memorial cemetery, before the commemoration service took place.

Mourning events dedicated to the victims of the siege of School No. 1 are held every year in Beslan and other Russian cities.

Celebrations marking the start of the school year were cancelled across North Ossetia, and school classes will begin on 5 September, at the end of the three-day mourning period.

On September 1 2004, a group of armed terrorists seized School No. 1 in the town of Beslan in Russia's North Caucasian region. The militants took more than a thousand adults and children hostage in the school’s sports hall for three days, denying them access to food and water. 334 people were killed in the terrorist attack, 186 of whom were children.
