Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) had grown immeasurably in terms of reach and power, while speaking at a press conference following the SCO Summit in Astana on Thursday.

"As you can see, the desire to join the organisation is growing. In fact, it has become a really powerful global organisation [that involves] almost half of the world's population," Putin said.

The leader also stressed that the SCO was an attractive organisation because it represented 'one of the independent centres of the new multipolar world'.

"Gradually, this organisation started to gain momentum, and in today's world it has certainly become very much in demand, as it is obviously one of the independent centres of the new multipolar world. This is what has become attractive for the participants of the organisation and for those who would like to maintain constant contacts with it at various levels, both as guests and as observers," Putin said.

The 24th SCO Heads of State Council meeting chaired by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev was scheduled for July 3-4.

At the meetings, leaders discussed the results of the SCO's activities for 2023-2024 and considered co-operation in the political, security, economic and humanitarian spheres. The participants also signed more than 20 documents.

After the summit in Kazakhstan, the organisation’s presidency for 2024-2025 will pass to China.

The SCO now comprises 10 member states, 14 dialogue partners and two observer countries.
