A ceremony was held in Tehran on Monday to mark the connection of Russia's Mir payment system to Iran's Shetab banking network.
"A major step to de-dollarisation and easier economic collaboration between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Russia, has been successfully taken today," announced Mohammad-Reza Farzin, Governor of the Central Bank of Iran.
"By connecting the [respective] national payment systems of the two countries, the limits of e-payments will be overcome, and a new chapter of economic and cultural co-operation will begin," he continued.
The Central Bank chief added that Iranian tourists can now withdraw ruble notes at Russian ATMs from the rial balance on their Shetab cards.
For his part, Advisor to the governor of the Central Bank Mohsen Karimi also announced plans to link ruble account withdrawals at Iranian ATMs and to enable the use of Shetab cards for transactions in Russia.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak previously spoke about the country's work in integrating the national payment systems of Russia and Iran in the summer of 2022.
