Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that his country had always rejected Washington's attempts to limit Cuba's development by imposing 'illegal sanctions', during a meeting with Cuban leader Miguel Diaz-Canel in Moscow on Thursday.

"We always perceive with rejection and with a sense of support for the Cuban people the attempts that have been made by the United States for many years, attempts to limit Cuba's development, to cause economic damage through illegal sanctions, illegal restrictions," Putin said.

The Russian leader also noted the contribution of Cuban volunteers to victory in World War II.

"Cuban patriots also took part in the war against Nazism, fought on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War and fought for Leningrad in the most difficult areas, including Nevsky Pyatachok. We remember it, we know it, and we will always have great respect for those who stood shoulder to shoulder with our fathers and great-grandfathers and fought together against Nazism," the head of state stressed.

For his part, Diaz-Canel claimed his country was under threat from media 'harassment' and suffering from 'the trade and economic embargo', but that 'the Russian Federation can always count on Cuba's support'.

"We constantly condemn the geopolitical manipulation carried out by the US government and the threat of NATO's approach to the borders of the Russian Federation. We wish you and the Russian Federation success in the special military operation (Ukraine conflict)," the Cuban leader added.

Earlier in the day, Diaz-Canel attended the Victory Day parade on Red Square to mark the 79th anniversary of the end of World War II. The presidents of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Guinea-Bissau, as well as the leader of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, also attended.
