Description

A delegation representing Afghanistan’s Taliban administration was seen touring the 27th St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), in footage taken at the venue on Thursday.

Footage also features forum guests from Oman participating in the opening ceremony for their own exhibition booth.

Last month, the Russian Foreign and Justice Ministries proposed removing the Taliban from the list of 'banned terrorist organisations'. The movement has been under UN sanctions since 1999.

On June 5, Vladimir Putin said it was important to establish relations with the Taliban as they 'control the power in Afghanistan'.

Over a dozen countries have 'de facto' diplomatic relations with the Taliban on some level without any nation formally recognising the government. They include China, which became the first to name an ambassador to Afghanistan in 2023, as well as the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Pakistan, and others in the region.

SPIEF 2024, taking place from June 5-8, includes participants from over 136 countries. Since its inception in 1997, the forum has served as a platform for international dialogue on economic matters, with the patronage and participation of the Russian Federation's president since 2005.
