President of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Sergei Katyrin claimed that the West’s 'efforts' were 'no longer aimed' only at Moscow, but also at its partners, speaking on the sidelines of the 27th St Petersburg International Economic Forum on Friday.

"The West’s main efforts are no longer aimed only at us, but also at our partners. You see that there is a tremendous pressure on banks, the threat of secondary sanctions, pressure on companies that co-operate with Russia," Katyrin said.

"The main effort today is to make sure that the dome that they are trying to create over Russia in order to prevent anyone from coming here, is full of holes, they are trying to patch these holes somehow," he continued.

Meanwhile, Deputy Secretary General of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation Khan Sohail admitted that abandoning the dollar in international settlements was 'not really easy'.

"Like English is a global language, it’s very difficult to get rid of this language. So the dollar is also a global currency, it’s not really easy to get rid of the dollar because more than 90 per cent of international trade is being transacted in dollars," he said.

SPIEF 2024, taking place from June 5-8, includes participants from over 136 countries. Since its inception in 1997, the forum has served as a platform for international dialogue on economic matters, with the patronage and participation of the Russian Federation's president since 2005.
