Description

Ethiopian Federation House Speaker Agegnehu Teshager said that the BRICS organisation should create its 'own currency', in an interview on the sidelines of the 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in St Petersburg on Thursday.

Teshager also said that Ethiopia has 'very great potential' for agriculture, industry and manufacturing, and is eager to explore projects with other members of the group.

"We are just pushing to open the BRICS countries and different countries to come to Ethiopia and to invest in Ethiopia. So the first thing is promoting investment, promoting infrastructure. So maybe we will be one of the centres of the BRICS. Maybe when the BRICS opens the bank, it may be one of the centres of the bank. When the BRICS wants to open the office in Africa, we want to be the centre of the office of Africa because we are the hub of Africa," he added.

Meanwhile, the First Vice President of the Brazilian Federal Senate Veneziano Vital do Rego said that the expansion of BRICS provides an opportunity to develop 'new relationships and strengthen' established ones.

"Now we have also sent a series of initiatives to the BRICS member countries about our vision to fight inequality. We have proposed our vision of how inequality can be fought and how great wealth can be taxed," Rego added.

The 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum takes place in St Petersburg from July 11-12, with delegations from 17 countries participating. According to organisers, parliamentarians are discussing ways to improve the efficiency of international relations, counter fragmentation of multilateral trade, address the consequences of global crises, and enhance humanitarian and cultural co-operation.
