Pakistani Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar stated that his country wanted to join BRICS and has 'all the requisites and requirements' for the membership, speaking at a press conference following a meeting with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk in Islamabad on Wednesday.

"Surely we would like to be active on all regional and multilateral forums which includes BRICS. Pakistan is keen to become a member, but obviously it is a new process of becoming a member. Pakistan has and will continue to comply [with] all the requisites and requirements which would entitle us to become a member," Dar said.

He also noted that trade between Russia and Pakistan reached a record high of one billion US dollars in 2023.

"Expansion and strengthening of trade relations by working out logistic and related issues is a priority for both sides," the minister added. "We even today looked at how we expand our relationship and overcome this constraint of the banking, you know, which are facing banking sector, the sanctions which obviously constrained the volume of relationship."

For his part, Overchuk said that Moscow was pleased with Pakistan’s bid to join BRICS.

"Special brotherly relationship that the BRICS countries, BRICS nations have developed over those years of BRICS existence as a platform is actually what is attracting many countries from throughout the world to BRICS. And we are happy that Pakistan has applied," he said.

Pakistan first applied to join BRICS in November 2023. Russia has held the BRICS presidency since January 1, 2024, when five more countries - Egypt, Iran, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia - became full members of the organisation.
