Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke of plans to establish a nuclear research science centre in Vietnam, during a meeting with graduates of Russian universities at the Hanoi Opera House on Thursday.

"It [centre] will be linked to medicine because modern atomic capabilities create additional opportunities for treating people and preventing diseases, including genetic diseases," he said.

The Russian leader pointed out that 3,000 Vietnamese people were currently studying in Russia, and a total of about 75,000 had received a Russian diploma.

"Of course, we intend to continue promoting student exchanges, academic mobility, launching joint educational projects and university programmes in every possible way," the president continued.

Putin also highlighted the need to switch to national currencies in trade deals between Moscow and Hanoi in light of economic sanctions imposed by the West.

The Russian President arrived in Vietnam at the invitation of Nguyen Phu Trong, General Secretary of the country’s Communist Party. Putin held talks with President To Lam, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, and National Assembly Chair Tran Thanh Man.

The Russian leader last travelled to the republic in 2017 when he attended the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) summit in Da Nang.

Earlier, Putin visited Pyongyang and held talks with DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) leader Kim Jong-un.
