Thousands of mourners gathered at Imam Reza shrine on Thursday to attend Iran's late President, Ebrahim Raisi's funeral ceremony in his home city of Mashhad, four days after he died in a helicopter crash.
Footage shows mourners surrounding the truck carrying the late president's body. Grieving locals carrying flags and placards can also be seen while Raisi's body was placed on stage inside the shrine.
"It was one of the saddest days and moments that I have experienced. This sadness for us is still ongoing. We hope that God chooses us to continue the martyr's (Raisi's) legacy," said local Haj Molayi.
Ebrahim Raisi will be laid to rest at the gold-domed Imam Reza Shrine, one of the holiest sites in Iran and a memorial to the eighth Shia imam, following three days of ceremonies held across the country.
"Our country is a democratic one. All martyrs who were martyred in this incident were democratically elected. Their presence or absence won't cause any disturbance in the sovereignty of the Islamic Republic. A new president will replace him soon," said local Moghadas.
On Wednesday, leaders and dignitaries from the country's allies and neighbouring nations attended a commemorative event in Tehran.
"We are facing a big challenge. We have lost a great personality. We have lost our president, but as Haji (Qasem Soleimani) used to say, this is a threat that by God's grace we will turn into an opportunity," said Shab Zende Dar another local.
Raisi and other Iranian leaders were killed in a helicopter crash on Sunday, according to state media and Iranian officials on Monday.
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei declared five days of national mourning. First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will take over as acting president for an interim period, with elections scheduled after 50 days. Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani becomes acting foreign minister.
Condolences were offered by the leaders of Russia, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Egypt and other countries. Raisi, a conservative cleric seen as close to Khamenei, and a potential successor was elected in 2021.
