A young Palestinian man is bringing the magic of cinema to displaced children in southern Gaza’s Rafah, as seen in footage captured on Tuesday.

Mohammed Al-Khoudari screens animated classics such as Disney’s 'Cinderella' to help locals escape the psychological toll of war as part of his 'Cinema for Children' initiative.

"I have been doing this event for nearly a month with around 22 films displayed in different temporary shelters and among tents. I intend to activate it using the same arrangements daily God willing," he explained.

"Children need to change their lifestyle physically and psychologically as they endure different daily challenges and harsh conditions including bombardment and ongoing war for 7 months,” Al-Khoudari continued.

Video shows Al-Khoudari visiting displacement camps with a film projector and setting up a makeshift cinema with a fabric screen.

“I'm, quite thrilled to have a cinema here that entertains children. Cinderella is my favourite movie for its lovely ending that brings joy to our hearts,” one of the children added.

In a report published in April 2023, the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) stated that the estimated number of children under 18 years stands at 2.39 million in Palestine constituting 44% of the total population, 41% in the West Bank, and 47% in the Gaza Strip. A

Fighting between Israel and Hamas has entered the seventh month in Gaza after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

Israel declared war on the group and a 'complete siege' of Gaza, with a large-scale campaign of air strikes. A ground incursion began at the end of the third week, with Israeli leaders vowing to 'wipe out' Hamas.

Palestinian officials reported that more than 34,535 people had been killed and more than 77,704 injured in the ongoing conflict at the time of publication.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) claimed that Hamas locations and infrastructure were targeted in the response. However, United Nations experts warned against 'collective punishment' for the people of Gaza, before predicting a 'humanitarian crisis' and then claimed that 'hell is settling in' for the region.
