Thousands of Turkish football fans in Berlin celebrated their team's 2-1 victory over Austria on Tuesday, securing a spot in the quarter-finals against the Netherlands.

Footage shows Turkish fans waving the national red crescent flag and blocking busy lanes with their cars, causing traffic jams. In addition, fans gathered in the city centre for a fireworks display.

"We are celebrating now! This is a magnificent moment for the Turkish team and we are in the quarter final!" said one.

"Very, very happy! It simply couldn't have been better! A bit close in the end, of course, but what can you say?" another shared.

Merih Demiral scored twice with one coming after just 57 seconds of play, the fastest goal ever in the knockout stages of the European Championship.

Austria are heading home, while Turkey advance to their first Euros quarter final since 2008. They travel to Berlin to face the Netherlands at the Olympiastadion on Saturday.

The UEFA Euro Championship takes place in Germany from June 14 to July 14. In total, 51 matches are scheduled in the tournament between 24 teams divided into six groups.
