Description

As Syria marks the 10th anniversary of the start of the devastating war on Monday, Homs, previously a major militant stronghold, was seen slowly returning to life, despite enormous destruction, on Sunday.

The city's market place was seen bustling with life, contrasting with other parts of the city which have been reduced to rubble due to intense fighting, including a three-year-long siege that ended in 2014 with the Syrian Arab Army regaining control of the city.

"We have been working here before the war broke out for nearly 25 years, the situation was pretty good. Then the war erupted inflicting harm and pain. We fled the store nearly nine years ago and came back about a year and a half ago," said Ahmed Sebsebi al-Rifa’i, a trader in Homs market. "The situation is great as the country is heading toward recovery. So we call for all people who left to far or near places to return to Syria."

Previously a major industrial centre, the city is now trying to recover with reconstruction underway since 2018.
