Bernardo Silva replied just a minute later and Sterling, again, found himself on the score sheet on 21 minutes, leaving the tie finely poised at 3-2 going into the break.

The second half saw Aguero smash past Hugo Lloris to swing the tie back in City's favour.

But Fernando Llorento headed in from a corner to ensure Spurs' progress.

A stoppage time Raheem Sterling strike was ruled out via VAR for offside.

Head coaches of both teams, Guadiola and Pochettino both nevertheless spoke in support of VAR in the post game presser.

Spurs will now face Ajax to see who will make it to the June 1 final in Madrid.

In the other quarter-final, Liverpool defeated Porto 4-1 and will now face Barcelona.
