Description

Streets were seen inundated with water in Galveston on Thursday after Tropical Storm Alberto hit coastal Texas.

Footage shows cars driving through waterlogged streets in the wake of the storm as locals took stock of the damage.

"I didn't even want to open my door and see if everything was okay outside," a Galveston local said. "You can tell that this place is pretty flooded. The other opening, you can't even go right now because it's all broken up."

"It's kind of hard when you have babies and you've got to evacuate," added a second. I didn't expect five and a half feet of water in my house at all. So, it's kind of crazy."

According to the US National Hurricane Centre (NHC), the first named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season formed over the western Gulf of Mexico and moved to the south Texas coast, with maximum sustained winds of 80 kilometres per hour (50 MPH).

Tropical Storm Alberto mainly had affected Mexico, reportedly leading to at least four deaths and leaving 24 families homeless.

Forecasters are sounding the alarm, predicting an exceptionally active Atlantic hurricane season this year due to the La Nina weather pattern and rising ocean temperatures.
