Description

Dutch police detained pro-Palestine activists at Dam Square in Amsterdam as hundreds of fans for the Israeli football club Maccabi Tel Aviv surrounded the National Monument ahead of the team clash with Ajax on Thursday.

Footage shows police cordoning off the Dam Square as Maccabi fans gather and light smoke flares. The police also was seen providing security for the Maccabi fans after the game with Ajax before activists with Palestinian flags attempted to heckle them.

According to reports at least two people were arrested, but police didn't specify if they were football fans or pro-Palestinian supporters.

According to media reports, the clashes reportedly erupted in the capital of the Netherlands despite the ban on pro-Palestine demonstrations imposed by Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema.

Following the reports of clashes, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu commented on the incident, saying that "the harsh pictures of the assault on our citizens in Amsterdam will not be overlooked," and sent two planes to Amsterdam to bring the Israeli fans home.

"The Prime Minister has directed that two rescue planes be sent immediately to assist our citizens," said a statement from his office.

Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, condemned the violence in a message posted in his X (former Twitter) account.

The game at Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam concluded with Ajax 5-0 win over Maccabi Tel Aviv.
