Description

Heavy torrential rainfall has struck Nigeria, causing widespread flooding throughout Lagos State, and blocking major roads throughout the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State.

Footage shot on Wednesday shows the devastating impact of the floodwaters on residential areas, with locals struggling to clear water from their homes and navigate through submerged streets, leading to traffic congestion and challenges in daily life.

Residents like Faith Adesina expressed concern over the recurring issue of increased fares during heavy rainfall and the resulting transportation difficulty.

"Anytime it rains, the fare always increases and that's a big challenge. And anytime there's a downpour for like 24 hours, nobody goes out, nobody comes in," he said

"This flood is something else. It's actually disturbing us here. Like some of us, we couldn't go to work. Even our cars too have issues because of the flood. I can tell you that one of our neighbours, water entered into her house and she used to pay 1.3 million Naira for that house," another local, Benjamin Adams, said.

The Lagos government attributed the flooding to the rising level of the lagoon following the intense rainfall.

The situation worsened on Wednesday, impacting various communities including Epe, Eredo, Bogije, Labora, Abijon, Sangotedo, and Awoyaya, among others.

In response to the crisis, the government has mobilised the Emergency Flood Abatement Gang to address the critical spots affected by the flooding.
