Description

Dozens of students were seen setting up tents on the University of Barcelona campus, demanding Spanish universities to cut all ties with Israel and the government put on halt arms trade with the country amid ongoing pro-Palestine protests.

Footage filmed on Monday shows students gathered in the yard with Palestinian flags chanting 'Zionist state, terrorist state' and 'Israel murders, Europe sponsors'.

"The camping we do today we do it following the others we have seen in the United States, which have spread also in European cities like Paris, here also in Spain. They started at the University of Valencia and we do this camping because we consider that the youth we cannot stand aside," said Pablo, a student.

According to him, the protest follows the series of encampment protests which have speared the universities across the US and Europe calling the institutions to cut ties with Israel.

The protest kicked off months after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

Israel declared war on the group and a 'complete siege' of Gaza, with a large-scale campaign of air strikes. A ground incursion began at the end of the third week, with Israeli leaders vowing to 'wipe out' Hamas. Palestinian officials reported that at least 34,683 people had been killed and 78,018 injured at the time of publication.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) claimed that Hamas locations and infrastructure were targeted in the response. However, United Nations experts warned against 'collective punishment' for the people of Gaza, before predicting a 'humanitarian crisis' and then claimed that 'hell is settling in' for the region.
