Description

Archive footage filmed between 1973 and 1975 features locals and military personnel rebuilding villages and cities across Vietnam, as the decades-long conflict reached its conclusion.

Footage shows work to restore damaged buildings and infrastructure. Adults and children can be seen clearing debris and returning to their homes, as well as doing preparatory work for the construction of a dam.

Others are seen going about their daily lives, selling goods, commuting and doing agricultural work.

The Vietnam War officially ended on January 27, 1973, following the signing of the Paris Peace Accords. South Vietnamese communist forces, the governments of North and South Vietnam, and the United States all participated.

The deal was frequently broken by North and South Vietnamese forces with open fighting taking place in March 1973.

A massive North Vietnamese offensive conquered South Vietnam in 1975 and the two countries, which had been separate since 1954, were reunited on July 2, 1976, as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

According to historical data, more than 3 million people, including over 58,000 from the US, were killed in the conflict. More than half of those who died were Vietnamese civilians.

This archive footage is released as part of the '100 Key Events in Russia in the 20th and 21st Centuries', a project with the Russian State Documentary Film and Photo Archive (rgakfd.ru).
