Description

Hundreds of locals were seen enjoying the sun in the parks of New York City on Wednesday as temperatures soared above 30 degrees Celsius, despite authorities warning of the dangers of the heatwave.

Footage shows visitors enjoying the hot day at Washington Square Park, jogging near Brookfield Place Waterfront Plaza, sipping milkshakes, and buying drinks and ice cream.

"You stay really hydrated during this heat wave like we are all drinking a lot of water, and make sure you are not in the sun for too long, or if you are feeling light-headed or symptoms of heat stroke you wanna get inside and stay cool," said Natalie.

New York City temperatures are forecast to climb over 20 degrees higher than the mid-June average. The Big Apple hasn't experienced such weather since July 2012, during one of the most severe heatwaves on record.

Local media reports had health professionals cautioning New Yorkers about the risks of heatstroke, which can lead to severe health issues among children and the elderly. The New York State Department of Health also put out an advisory for people to limit outdoor activity due to deteriorating air quality.
