A flag-raising ceremony was held in the Golden Bauhinia Square in Hong Kong on Monday to mark the region's 27th anniversary of region's handover to China, also known as Establishment Day.
Footage shows military bands playing the region's anthem as the flags of both Hong Kong and China raised high in presence of senior officials and members of uniformed groups. A cermony was later held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, where Chief Executive John Lee delivered his address.
"Fellow citizens, we are all part of the Hong Kong family. Let's stand united and scale new heights for Hong Kong together," said Lee during the reception.
"We have completed the local legislation for Article 23 of the Basic Law, fulfilling the constitutional responsibility and historic mission that Hong Kong had waited 26 years, eight months and 19 days to accomplish," he continued.
Lee also announced the arrival of two giant pandas, a gift that China had presented to Hong Kong to mark the handover anniversary.
Hong Kong was returned to China on July 1, 1997, after 156 years of British rule.
