Description

Amid a scorching heatwave, locals in India are struggling with an acute water shortage crisis, as seen in footage captured in New Delhi on Thursday.

Vast crowds are seen queuing in long lines to fetch water from tankers while clinging onto plastic containers.

The scene has become a common occurrence since the onset of summer, with the people of Kusumpur Pahadi in Vasant Vihar, Geeta Colony in East Delhi, and Okhla in South East Delhi worst affected.

"If the tankers come on time, then we can send our children on time to school. If they don't arrive, the children and women at home are worried due to household issues. When there is no water, there is no peace," a local said.

"The temperature is so high now, it's over 47 degrees and with that, we are facing a severe water crisis here. Tanker water is the only source of water for the people here, and the tankers take the entire week to come, and other times, they don't," added a second.

According to local reports, the water shortage in Delhi has ignited a political dispute between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

The AAP has accused the BJP of intentionally obstructing the water flow into the city while the BJP criticised the opposing party for failing to take sufficient action against a 'tanker mafia' that is 'looting' supplies.

India, along with much of South Asia and South East Asia, is reeling under the extreme temperatures that have caused schools to close in several countries, with urgent health warnings throughout the region.
