Iranian President Hassan Rouhani pledged to take 'any opportunity' to lift US sanctions against his country, in the aftermath of Democratic nominee Joe Biden's victory against President Trump, as he was speaking at a weekly cabinet session in Tehran on Wednesday.

"We hope that the American people will work out the situation in such a way that we can see the White House return to the right path based on the interests of the American people and without humiliating other nations and adhering to its own commitments. Of course, we will use any opportunity wherever we see that the conditions are ready for the lifting of sanctions," said Rouhani.

"This newcomer [US President-elect Joe Biden] has said from the beginning in his election campaign that he wants to return to JCPOA. Well, we are the ones who stayed and did not leave it," added the Iranian president.

Rouhani also stated that his administration based their policies on the assumption that Trump would win.

"The regime [Trump administration], that dreamed of the fall of Iran and the fall of the Iranian system, itself was overthrown in a very humiliating way,” commented Rouhani.

An Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said earlier this week that Tehran will not renegotiate the terms of the 2015 nuclear deal with the next US president.

US President-Elect Joe Biden was vice president when the nuclear deal was struck. He recently said the US could rejoin the accord if Iran returns to compliance with it.
