Description

At least six people are reported to have died after a knifeman attacked the Bondi Junction Westfield shopping centre in Sydney on Saturday.

Footage captured by an eye-witness shows crowds of locals fleeing the scene.

Authorities say a small child and a mother are among the dozens injured in the attack, which occurred shortly after 3 pm.

Hundreds of people were reportedly hiding in shops inside the centre as the knifeman carried out the attack.

The suspect, who has yet to be identified was later shot dead by police. His motive remains unknown at the time of publication.

Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as a 'horrific act of violence', saying the suspect had 'indiscriminately' targeted innocent people while praising the officer who shot the attacker as a 'hero'.

Australian Federal Police Commissioner Reece Kershaw has said authorities are 'not ruling out' the possibility that the attack was a terrorist incident but warned it was 'unhelpful to speculate'. An investigation into the stabbing is now underway.
