Israeli Minister of Defence Yoav Gallant said the IDF had 'thwarted' the Iranian attack on its territory in an 'impressive manner' while addressing the nation from Tel Aviv on Sunday.

“I have recently completed an operational situation assessment with senior members of Israel’s defence establishment. The State of Israel was attacked [by Iran] with hundreds of missiles and UAVs,” Gallant said.

“Together with the United States and additional partners, we managed to defend the territory of the State of Israel. Very little damage was caused – this is the result of the IDF’s impressive operations,” he added.

Gallant went on to describe Iran as a 'terrorist state', adding that the world has now seen its 'true face'.

“On the other hand, the world also saw the power of a coalition, and how Israel, together with the United States and additional partners, stood together and thwarted this attack in a way that is unparalleled,” the defence minister said.

“The campaign is not over yet – we must remain alert and attentive to the instructions published by the IDF and Homefront Command. We must be prepared for every scenario,” he continued.

Iran launched hundreds of drones and missiles towards Israel on Saturday night in Tehran’s first direct attack on the Jewish state, signalling a major escalation of tensions in the region.

The attack came as a response to the alleged Israeli airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus on April 1, which killed at least seven members of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), including a senior Quds Force commander.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed Iran had launched '300 threats of various types' towards Israel, adding that '99%' of the rockets and drones had been intercepted.

IRGC Chief of Staff Mohammad Bagheri has warned that Tehran would launch a 'much bigger' offensive if Israel were to target Iranian soil in response to Saturday’s attack.

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said Washington had intercepted 'dozens of missiles and UAVs' before they had entered Israeli airspace. President Joe Biden reiterated his 'ironclad' support for the Jewish state and said he will convene a G7 meeting on Sunday.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged both sides to exercise restraint and said he was 'deeply alarmed', warning of a 'very real danger' of a 'major military confrontation' on multiple fronts in the Middle East.

Israel’s ambassador has requested an emergency UN Security Council meeting to condemn the attack and designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation.
