The International Olympics Committee held a press conference on Wednesday confirming and regretting reports that larger-than-needed amounts of food were ordered due to a miscalculation at the Tokyo 2020 games, particularly at the opening ceremony.
According to Takaya Masa, Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee spokesperson, staff and volunteers "were not able to consume" all the food that was ordered, adding that "from this week, measures to optimize the volume of orders are being implemented in each venue."
"We regret the large amount of over-ordering that has occurred until now, but please note that surplus food is not disposed, but recycled into animal feed and bio gasses," Masa told the press.
Videos have surfaced online showing large amounts of bento boxes and bread being discarded.
