Locals and tourists shared their experiences as summer season in Italy brings in extreme heat with temperatures reaching as high as 38 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

Footage captured in Catania shows people drinking water, eating ice cream or purchasing refreshments. Children were also seen cooling themselves in fountain at Piazza del Duomo.

"It's quite hot, I don't know if it's normal. I've almost never felt this heat here. In my opinion it's not normal, too hot," a tourist said.

A local tourist guide shared he had seen visitors collapsing due to the hot weather with some having to seek treatment in an ambulance. He added that people over 40 years old also complained of feeling tired.

Eight cities in Italy were issued heat warnings on Friday as forecasters said temperatures could climb to more than 39 degrees Celsius in some parts of the country, according to media reports.
