Thousands of demonstrators gathered and marched in protest over Israel's participation in the Eurovision contest in Malmo on Saturday.

Footage shows demonstrators gathering and holding Palestinian flags and banners, including with the message ‘Welcome to the Genocide Song Contest’, before marching while chanting messages of support for Gaza.

Israel and twenty-five European countries were competing in the grand final of the event as the protesters gathered outside, as estimates on the number of demonstrators vary from 6,000 to 10,000.

In March the representatives of nine participating countries, including eventual winner Nemo of Switzerland, called for a lasting ceasefire in Gaza.

In 2022, Russia was excluded from the Eurovision Song Contest by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which oversees the competition, amid accusations of propaganda via its broadcasting channels in the wake of the war in Ukraine.

The EBU has since announced that the competition is apolitical and dismissed calls to disqualify Israel, although it did reportedly require Israel to change its song entry from ‘October Rain’, allegedly a reference to the October 7 attack by Hamas. Israeli entrant Eden Golan performed the song ‘Hurricane’, and finished the contest in fifth place.

Fighting in Gaza has entered the eighth month after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200 according to Israeli officials.

Israel declared war on the group and a 'complete siege' of Gaza, with a large-scale campaign of air strikes. A ground incursion began at the end of the third week, with Israeli leaders vowing to 'wipe out' Hamas. Palestinian officials reported that at least 34,971 people had been killed and 78,641 injured at the time of publication.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) claimed that Hamas locations and infrastructure were targeted in the response. However, United Nations experts warned against 'collective punishment' for the people of Gaza, before predicting a 'humanitarian crisis' and then claimed that 'hell is settling in' for the region.
