Description

Yemen hosted its first mango festival at the Al-Sabeen Park in Sanaa on Sunday.

Footage shows visitors flocking to the event as companies specialising in mango production displayed their crops at stalls. A traditional Yemeni dance troupe is also seen performing for the crowds.

“The aim [of the festival] is to market the fruits at the global level, not just the regional level. The future objective is to promote the product at the highest levels in Asia, Europe, and the Americas so that it becomes global not just regional,” a local grower said.

“We are honoured to hold this festival that presents the Yemeni people and enhances self-sufficiency. We encourage farmers who produce crops because they support the country’s economy, and act as a source of pride for the Yemeni people,” a participant added.

The five-day festival was organized by the Higher Agricultural and Fisheries Committee, the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, and the Agricultural and Fisheries Initiatives Projects Financing Unit in the Municipality.

Mango has been grown in Yemen for over 200 years, initially in Lahj Governorate. The General Authority for Agricultural and Rural Development estimates the number of mango trees planted in Yemen to be around two million with 17,000 trees,

Yemen’s mango production has seen a steady decline in recent years due to several factors, including conflict and drought. Before the Yemeni civil war, the country’s mango production totalled 400,000 tons, according to agricultural statistics.
