The crew of an El Al Israeli Airlines flight was making final preparations befire taking off from Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv bound for Amsterdam on Friday, to evacuate Israelis following reported clashes between football fans that occurred before and after the match between Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv.

"We are making other preparations before departing for an El Al rescue flight from Amsterdam to Israel. We want to emphasise our importance as a national carrier, which takes care of bringing the people of Israel home, from anywhere in the world," El Al pilot Captain Lior Meir stated.

The Israeli military had announced that it would operate flights to the Netherlands, but later said that the deployment of soldiers to Amsterdam was cancelled.

In the meantime, the Israeli government urgently sent Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar to the Netherlands to follow up on the issue.

Dutch authorities said that 62 people were arrested following the riots surrounding the Ajax vs Maccabi Tel Aviv match in Amsterdam.

Fans were reportedly attacked in the Dutch capital before the game started and after Israli team lost to Ajax, according to media reports.

Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof condemned the incidents calling them 'unacceptable' and 'anti-Semitic'.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu commented on the incident saying, "The harsh images of the attack on our citizens in Amsterdam will not be tolerated," and announced the dispatch of two planes to Amsterdam to bring Israeli fans back home.

Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, condemned the violence in a post on his X account.

The match, which took place at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam, ended with Ajax winning 5-0 against Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Maccabi Tel Aviv is set to face Turkish team Besiktas in the UEFA Europa League on November 28 in Istanbul.
