Description

Southern Gaza's main city saw a mass exodus on Sunday as Israel announced a new military operation. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported having "precise intelligence" about renewed terror activities in the region after rockets were fired at Kissufim.

Residents in the al-Jalaa neighbourhood scrambled to evacuate following warnings from the IDF. "We woke up to the sounds of people in the streets, saying evacuate, evacuate. They are going to bomb the towers," said Walaa Abu Shrekh, a local. "My husband and son are war-injured, and I live on the fifth floor. I don’t know where to go. All the houses were destroyed, and there’s nowhere to go. Where can we go? There’s no safe place left."

The Palestinian News and Information Agency (WAFA) reported that the IDF demanded the immediate evacuation of residents from the Al-Jalaa area and new neighbourhoods in central Khan Younis. WAFA noted that over 70,000 people from eastern and central Khan Younis have been displaced.

The IDF adjusted the boundaries of the designated humanitarian zone, citing evidence that the Hamas group was operating from it. The new evacuation warnings have intensified the crisis in southern Gaza.

The Hamas-Israel war erupted after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

In the enclave, the IDF launched a large-scale campaign of airstrikes and ground incursions, killing 39,790 Palestinians and injuring 91,002 others as of the time of publication
