02:25At least 22 people were killed after a massive fire broke out at a battery factory in Hwaseong following multiple explosions, south of the capital Seoul in South Korea, with emergency services continuing search and rescue operations on Monday.
Footage shows the aftermath of the blaze featuring the burned factory building and emergency services working at site. The fire has been contained.
Most of the deceased were Chinese workers, and are believed to have fallen victim to inhaling the highly toxic smoke.
The government called an emergency meeting over the incident which occurred after a series of battery cells exploded in the warehouse housing over 30,000 batteries.
Battery manufacturer Aricell builds lithium primary batteries for sensors and telecommunication devices, among others, and the plant employs up to 50 people in total.
What caused the explosions remained unclear at the time of publication. It was also reported that the large fire affected all three floors of the reinforced concrete building with a total area of about 2,300 square metres.
