Description

Residents of Beirut’s southern suburbs have fled to safer areas in the capital, the mountains, and the north following warnings from the Israeli army to avoid Hezbollah-targeted zones. Footage from Saturday shows evacuees seeking refuge in public parks in Beirut and loading their vehicles with personal belongings in a bid to escape the escalating violence.

Ibrahim Al-Haraka, a Lebanese citizen from the southern suburbs, condemned the Israeli strikes, saying: "These Israeli criminals struck southern suburbs, the Israeli and American criminals attacked Palestine and Lebanon, destroyed southern suburbs, and destroyed all of south Lebanon. We ask the whole world to help us because we are on the right side."

Another resident, Fadi Mohsen, described the devastation: "Our homes have been destroyed, we have been displaced, and there is random shelling everywhere. All the floors have collapsed. If we are not afraid of the strike... May God Almighty help us, grant us justice, and calm our minds."

Basil Darwish, a Syrian refugee living in Beirut’s southern suburbs, also shared his harrowing experience: "We live near the airport bridge... When the bombing increased, the sounds of screaming rose. I was sleeping on the ground, jolted up, and fell from the force of the blast."

The mass displacement follows intensified Israeli airstrikes, with the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirming the destruction of Hezbollah’s central headquarters in Beirut’s southern suburbs. Hezbollah later announced that their Secretary-General, Hassan Nasrallah, was killed in the strike, along with other unidentified leaders. The Israeli army reported conducting over 140 airstrikes on Hezbollah-related sites in the region.

The bombardment, part of Israel’s 'Operation Northern Arrows,' has led to more than 1,030 deaths and 6,300 injuries across Lebanon, with heavy shelling impacting the south, the Bekaa Valley, Mount Lebanon, and Beirut. Additionally, over 50,000 people have fled Lebanon to Syria, while another 200,000 have been displaced internally.

Tensions in southern Lebanon escalated in September after the pagers—used by Hezbollah—explosions and the Israeli shelling of Beirut's southern suburb, killing Hezbollah senior commander Ibrahim Aqeel with the other 60 people. Hezbollah, in response, bombed areas near the northern Israeli city of Haifa.

Hezbollah, Lebanese, and Palestinian factions have been exchanging cross-border shelling with the Israeli forces since October 8, one day after the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.
