Hundreds of rowers were seen competing on the Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha, India's Kerala State on Saturday, during the 70th Nehru Trophy Boat Race which was delayed due to the devastating landslides last month.

Footage features dozens of long boats in the shape of snakes drifting along the waterway at high speed as well as competitors dressed in colourful uniforms are seen rowing. Spectators were seen cheering and blowing whistles during the race.

Captain of the Alappuzha Town Boat Club Jose Arathanpall said that the team includes approximately 99 rowers including 85 oarsmen, five rowers on the top and five on the base as well as two drummers and two guides.

"Our team is well prepared to enter the finals. If god wills, our team will win the trophy," he shared his hopes for his team's victory.

This year the annual race was scheduled to take place on August 10, however, it was delayed until September 28 amid the series of devastating landslides that occurred in southern India as a result of heavy monsoon rains.

According to media reports, 73 boats of various grades were registered for the competition involving members of numerous clubs from across India. The Karichal Chundan team reportedly won the race scoring the record time of 4 for minutes and 29, 78 seconds.

The Nehru Trophy Boat Race which was named after Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru has taken place since 1952 every second Saturday of August, according to local media reports.
